SafeShare Release Notes 3.0

Release overview

Key new features in the Covata 3.0 release

  • New SafeShare Clients:
    • Mac OS X - Supported on Yosemite (OSX 10.10) and El Capitan (10.11) operating systems
    • Android - Supported on Android Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.3 (API 15) to Android Lollipop (API 22)
  • SafeShare for Web User Interface:
    • The Web application includes new UI/UX enhancements that incorporate feedback from internal and external reviews 
    • New granular controls for notifications (managed by sender)
    • Improved awareness and control of permissions (CS-322)
  • User Engagement: To support adoption of SafeShare, regular emails and introductory documents can now be distributed to new users
  • Multi-tenancy: The Covata Platform and SafeShare clients now support multi-tenancy through organisations. Users and administrators can be a member of one or more organisations. Telcos and partners can now create multiple organizations from a single deployment of SafeShare.
  • Address book: A global address book is now available for users within an organization
  • Device Management: SafeShare now provides users with device management functions accessible from My Account.
  • Fingerprinting and Watermarking: When enabled by an administrator, files within the encrypted content viewer now display a fingerprint and custom watermark. Fingerprints and watermarks ensure that files display within the viewer remain identifiable to the organization and user that has accessed them (CS-308)
  • Privacy statement: All SafeShare clients now provide a link to the SafeShare privacy information page
  • Message Queue: In accordance with the ongoing development to migrate the Covata Platform to a microservices architecture, message queues have now been implemented. RabbitMQ must be implemented for all Covata Platform deployments running 3.0 or greater.
  • HDFS Support: The Covata Platform now supports HDFS. This allows the platform to use file system as a store, in addition to S3.

  • Allow a single email notification for files in a shared folder (CS-292)
  • Collaborators field when sharing should populate from a directory (CS-280)
  • Remove file dialog in SafeShare should say name of file to be deleted (CS-302)
  • Better label for User Sign-in Activity on dashboard (CS-307)
  • Consolidate Decrypt menu items in SafeShare for Windows (CS-325)
  • Allow a user to enable and disable the automatic startup for SafeShare for Windows (CS-345)
  • Ability to set a site quota rather than a per user quota (CS-219)
  • Allow groups of users to have a quota (CS-245)
  • The error message for exceeding the maximum contacts should be expanded in the Web application (CS-320)

Resolved customer support issues

  • Collaborator email address is not automatically completed for users with accounts (CS-167)
  • Removing a file refreshes back to the All Files view (CS-311)
  • Forgot your password does not always copy email from previous login page (CS-316)
  • Error message when exceeding the maximum allowed contacts in SafeShare for Windows is obscured (CS-321)
  • File space reported is incorrect (CS-328)
  • Link text on the login page cannot be internationalized (CS-339)
  • Powerpoint file had images flipped and moved when opening from SafeShare for Windows (CS-341)
  • When uploading a file with invalid characters the message lacks detail (CS-299)
  • i18n key displayed rather than label from email link (CS-301)
  • Item details do not refresh on share or delete (CS-309)
  • Forgot password does not retain email address from previous page (CS-316)
  • Default fonts appearing in the Compatibility Mode Web Application (MVC-App) due to IE security settings (CS-351)

SafeShare for Windows

New features

  • New Content Viewer: The existing PDF and Image viewer has been replaced. The new viewer provides enhanced functionality for users
  • Application pane: New application pane in SafeShare for Windows accessible from the system tray icon. This pane displays useful information about the current status and tasks in progress
  • Organizations: Support added to allow users to switch between organizations
  • Added ability to notify collaborators of shared items

Enhancements

General

  • Watermarks have been added to all views (if enabled by an organization administrator)
  • The privacy link will now use the value provided by the server
  • Decrypting a view only file by dragging out of the folder no longer automatically opens the file in the viewer
  • If exiting the application during synchronization, users are prompted to confirm before proceeding.
  • Improved error reporting for connectivity and progress
  • A visual display of currently used quota is now displayed in the application pane
  • The contacts dialog has been redesigned
  • Improvements made to the presentation of permissions accessible from the context menu

Share Dialog

  • The share dialog has been redesigned to be more consistent with other SafeShare clients
  • Permission settings are now always enabled
  • Email addresses with invalid syntax are now coloured red
  • Re-implemented the auto-complete feature of the share dialog (first name, last name, email and icon)
  • Auto-complete entries now occur from the organization address book as well as the personal contacts of the user

Settings

  • New option to prevent auto-starting with Windows (CS-345)
  • New option to toggle system tray notifications
  • Cache policy options simplified to a global setting (selection of top level folders was removed)
  • Cache policy options are now specific to the current Windows user account
  • The access service URL can now be configured in the settings dialog (the option can be disabled by administrators)
  • Log files are now accessible in the settings dialog

Context Menu

  • Shell extension context menu reduced to a single submenu (CS-325)
  • New items have been added to the shell extension context menu: Help, Get Share Link, Unshare and Notify collaborators.

System Tray

  • The system tray icon now displays a busy status when file operations are in progress
  • Added configurable Privacy link to system tray context menu
  • System tray options have been reduced and an 'Expand' option added to toggle the display of the application pane

Resolved issues 

  • Powerpoint files had images flipped and moved when opening from SafeShare for Windows (CS-341)

SafeShare for OS X

SafeShare for OSX was released as an official client as part of the 3.0 release. 

Supported on Yosemite (OSX 10.10) and El Capitan (10.11) operating systems.

The OS X client includes functionality in accordance with existing SafeShare clients.

SafeShare for iOS

New features

  • Added support for sign-in via two-factor authentication
  • Support added for organization groups to allow users to switch between organizations
  • Users can now register their device (device registrations can be managed via the Web App) which allows them to create a passcode to access the app. This is an enhancement over the previous way passcodes were implemented as the user's session will no longer expire (which required the user to login using their username and password again).
  • UI updates for iOS 9
  • Privacy Statement link added to Settings screen

Enhancements

  • Users can now upload multiple videos/photos at once
  • Items in the listing now show date instead of size
  • Content for items under 5 MB is no longer downloaded and displayed automatically in the viewer - the user has the option to download the content/view where it has not been downloaded previously (cached) .
  • Icon enhancements (hamburger menu icon replaced with account settings icon)

Known Issues

  • Users that are currently logged in and are added to a new organization by the organization administrator will need to perform a new sign-in in order to collaborate in that organization

Notes

  • SafeShare for iOS now only supports iOS 8 and above

SafeShare for Android

SafeShare for Android was released as an official client as part of the 3.0 release

Covata Platform and Administration

New features

  • Multi-tenancy: The Covata Platform and SafeShare clients now support multi-tenancy through organisations. Users and administrators can be a member of one or more organisations. Telcos and partners can now create multiple organizations from a single deployment of SafeShare
  • Message Queue: In accordance with the ongoing development to migrate the Covata Platform to a microservices architecture, message queues have now been implemented. RabbitMQ must be implemented for all Covata Platform deployments running 3.0 or greater
  • HDFS Support: The Covata Platform now supports HDFS. This allows the platform to use file system as a store, in addition to S3.
  • The administration dashboard is now split between the SafeShare Administrator dashboard and the Organization Administrator dashboard.
  • Two-factor authentication can now be enabled at the organization level by the organization administrator

Changes

  • Email notifications are now batched for per item emails (and configurable by administrators) (CS-292)
  • Database and Web server optimization
  • LDAP connection for the user directory can only be used for single organization deployments
  • Discontinued support for Riak CS
  • Access Service clustering was removed and has been replaced by the message queue
  • The Content Service database has been removed from the Covata Platform
  • User details management is now the responsibility of the user (e.g., First name, Last name, Mobile number and Two-factor authentication)
  • Users can no longer be disabled from the user list. Following removal of a user from an organization, their data from that organization will be deleted

Upgrade notes

  • Important: Disabled users will be removed along with their data, upon upgrading to 3.0. (These users should be re-enabled temporarily prior to the deployment)
  • After installing 3.0 the default organization will be assigned a 'blank' quota and contact person. These values will need to be set by the SafeShare administrator before data can be uploaded
  • Administrators should be aware that existing plans that have the same name (with different sentence case) will become 'non editable' following an upgrade to 3.0
  • With launch of 3.0, SafeShare iOS no longer supports iOS 7 or earlier. 
  • The Compatibility Mode Web Application (MVC-App) is not supported for use on 3.0 Covata environments. This will be addressed in a future release
